Hoodie-wearing Bob Dylan meets Pope Leo XIV — Eagan Arts news

Just two Midwest boys shooting the breeze. That’s one way to interpret the newly released photo and press release from the Vatican showing Bob Dylan meeting with Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday. Rock music’s Nobel Prize-winning poet laureate, who’s from northern Minnesota, and the Catholic Church’s Bishop of Rome, who’s from the South Side of Chicago, had a brief meet-up at the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace that included “greetings and a few lighthearted exchanges,” according to the Vatican News announcement. Without any explanation, the singer/songwriter, 85, has been wearing similar hooded jackets throughout all of his low-lit concerts over the past two years. They exchanged gifts. Pope Leo gave Dylan a rosary, the Vatican News reported. Dylan gave the pope a signed copy of his 2004 autobiography, “Chronicles: Volume One,” which includes many pages detailing his upbringing in Duluth and especially Hibbing. Pope Leo is apparently no stranger to Dylan’s words. The Vatican noted in its press release that the Popequoted Dylan’s song lyrics in a book published in July, “ Disarmed and Disarming: Peace Is a Gift .” “I hate you cause yer man-made and man-owned, an’ man-handled,” was the line quoted, from Dylan’s 1963 nuclear-weapon protest song “Go Away Bomb.”
